A unique and beautiful mountain to hike. Cool, wet, mossy, muddy and slippery. The trail head starts at the end of the wooden bridge from the Mossy Forest entrance. Entrance fee RM10 (adult), RM5 (senior citizen and children) and RM30 (foreigner). There are a total of 10 checkpoints (CP) from trail head to the peak at 2110 m asl. From CP1 to CP4, the trail is descending. From CP4 to CP6 (Mini Irau, 2024 m asl ), it is ascending. From CP6 it descends to CP7. Then it is ascending all the way to the peak which is a short distance after passing CP10. Officially, the trail is open from CP1 to CP6 only. Parts of the trail farther up have been damaged by landslides. Extra caution is required if one chooses to proceed to the peak. The total distance one way is about 5km. Average time is about 3 to 4 hours one way. Hikers are advised to turn back at 2.00 p.m. for safety reasons as the forest can get dark early and fast. The trail is clear. One has to apply for a permit from the local forestry department to hike this mountain.

The trail starts from Mossy forest and then the trek starts to Gunung Irau on the left. There will be clear hiking path up to Gunung Irau. Do be careful because you would be walking on tree branches as the mud is very deep. So a good shoe that is slip resistant is important. You should also bring a good poncho as we got thin poncho from the shops and it wasn't enough. You do not need a guide or tour to climb up the mountain. We hitchhiked from the Petronas gas station up to the mountain as there are many visitors and locals coming up.

Gunung Irau peak at 2,110m. One of the entrance to Gunung Irau is hiking via Mossy Forest. Up and down track towards the peak of Irau. Moderate hiking will take you around 3 hours hiking with multiple stops along the route

Beautiful forest to hike through, and a few nice panoramas on the way. Decent view at the top too! Don't get fooled by the "mini-Irau" signs, there's still a fair way to go to reach the real peak. Go prepared and enjoy the temperature and surroundings, and it will be a nice day of exercise. Its quite a technical hike, so more strenuous than expected. So. Many. Roots! Lots of trip hazards, and easy to bash your head or shins on branches and roots if you aren't paying attention! Numerous inclines and declines. About 3.5 hours up, 2.5 back. We travelled the access road around 7am, and many of the drainage gutters perpendicular to the road were missing their coverings. These are wide enough for a wheel to completely drop, so you would need a 4x4 (luckily I had brought mine). However when we returned impromptu covers had been replaced/created and normal cars (even little Myvis!) had been able to reach the trail head.
