At UM in general, there are too many procedures/ steps to follow in terms of different counter take take of different thing e.g paying deposite before seeing the doctor is a must , when things are done, u got to go to the counter to refund the money etc. For patients who are unwell is very difficult task having to switch from counters to counters, unless family member comes along.

Previously it was an O&G Building and now it had been renovated and housed the Psychological Medical Complex. Very convenient except for car parking lots; you need to come early or otherwise you have to park your car outside the hospital compound. If you need to "fill up your stomach", there is a small mini market just outside the psycoterict clinic.

the doctor was ok. I would recommend anyone seeking mental health care to go here since they accommodate walk in but do come early. I think they have a quota for walk ins. However, PPUM's system (as I believe this is a hospital-wide procedure) is very inefficient in my view. These are the steps I went through from registration to medicine collection: 1. Take a number to register 2. Register when number is called 3. Receive new number 4. Wait for number to be called for weight measurement and blood pressure test 5. Wait again for number to be called to see doctor (this can take a while if you don't have an appointment) 6. Make next appointment at the registration counter. The registration counter staff seems to be overwhelmed by the volume of patients. I was sent to take a number even though this is not required to make a new appointment as the counter staff refused to listen to me properly 7. Go to the pharmacy counter with prescription 8. Take a number to pay for prescription 9. Wait 10. Pay for prescription I arrived at PPUM at around 10AM and finished all the steps at 1-1.30PM. Pros: 1. They accept card payments so no need to worry about cash, especially if you're not sure how much you'll have to pay for a visit 2. Doctor's rooms, registration and pharmacy counters are all in the same area Cons: 1. Apathetic staff though this might not entirely be on them. High patient volume & inefficient system could also be contributing factors 2. Too many steps. Why not let people arrange for next appointment and pay for prescription at the same time as these are done at the same counter? Sidenote: I received my medicine before paying for them. I could have just walked out without paying. And since I'd already received the medicine, I didn't have the prescription to give the reg counter staff who went, "Nak apa?" with zero effort to rectify issue with pharmacy staff 3. Staff from different counters and nurses don't communicate with each other. I was sent between the nurse's station to registration counter twice before a nurse went to reg counter with me to tell off the reg counter staff. See also sidenote from 2 4. No clear signs for dr's rooms and no information poster explaining the reg to med collection procedures, making it really hard to determine which step needed a number and which step didn't. Plus, wouldn't it be easier to have one number for everything? 5. Due to the walk in allowance, staff doesn't seem to care to answer the phones. I saw them hanging up on multiple calls. So perhaps they need a different department for answering phones. This would make it hard for people to reschedule or cancel appointments. Conclusion: The procedure for reg, appointment and payment sucks. I understand that it is a mostly public hospital so the service might not be 5 stars but for a first time visitor, all the going back and forth between counters were highly confusing. Maybe some helpful arrows and signs would make things easier if the computer system could not be changed? BUT access to affordable mental health care is very important so the existence of a walk in clinic like this one is already a good thing. Still, there is room for improvement and I hope PPUM won't let the mammoth of bureaucracy impede a mentally ill person from seeking out help.

I've been going to UM psych dept for a few years now, and it is still better than most public hospital I've been before. Never had to spent too long looking for parking, and the psych department isn't as packed as other hospitals. I mostly only go here to consult doctors on medication, and often missed my appointments so I just do walk-ins. It might take a while to get used to the procedures, as described by another review here. But once you got used to it, it's actually pretty smooth. The pharmacy is open on weekdays, 8am to 445pm. Doctors appointment are only available on Mondays and Wednesdays, either via appointments or walk-ins. Walk-ins are only available in the morning, it is advisable to come in as early as possible because the waiting procedures could take hours. Of course, public hospitals usually don't have enough manpower for talk therapy. So if you can afford it I highly recommend that you still seek professional help from private practitioners. There are cheaper services such as CLM (Cavalry Life Ministry) that offers non-Christian counselings, or RELATE Malaysia that offers talk therapy through phone.

Dr. Anbu is super rude. She really shouldnt be working in this department at all. I hope they will look into how she handles her patient closely so that patients can have a more respectable consultation. But the nurses are friendly and nice here.

The staff at the check in counter dilly-dally and gossip olinstead of doing their job everytime I go there cause thing the flow to be super slow. The doctors cancel your appointment for no reason and just expect you to deal with it. If you are hospitalized, you will meet inexperienced junior doctors that might scream at you just because you are having a panic episode etc. Overall, bad system, they dont care about their patients. Typical gov hospital.
