Masjid Kampung Laut (Mosque Kampung Laut), currently located at Nilam Puri wasn't the original location of the mosque. It was originally built in Kampung Laut (hence, its name) by the Kelantan river bank. Unfortunately during a big flood in 1967, the flood damaged most part of the mosque, which is then relocated to Nilam Puri. Most of the building materials are from the original structure.

Kampung Laut Mosque is a mosque located in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. It is located in Nilam Puri opposite the University Malaya Academy of Islamic Studies campus branch Kelantan, 20km from the center of Kota Bharu City. According to oral traditions, centuries ago, missionaries sailed throughout the Malay Archipelago to spread Islam. In the 1730s, a group of missionaries through the East coast of Peninsular Malaysia on their way to Pattani in South Thailand to Java in Indonesia. Unfortunately their boat was leaked and had trouble. Missionaries in the boat swore that if they were taken safely to the beach, they would build a mosque immediately to commemorate the event. Their prayers were granted, and the missionaries landed at Kampung Laut, Tumpat. The original mosque is not what we see today. It is a basic structure with only four pillars supporting the three-storey roof made of leafy leaves. Its area is only 400 square feet in total. At the end of the 19th century, this mosque became an important religious center and the mosque was enlarged to include additional prayer rooms, roles, porches and towers. 20 pillars are built to support this additional build. This additional build uses the unique 'Tail Drop' technique. It's built from wood but does not use even a nail. The roof of his rumbia leaves replaced with a tile roof.

Went here to check out this historical architecture, and wasn't disappointed. There is a certain aura in old buildings. Originally built at Kampung Laut but moved here to preserve it after soil erosion. I have never seen any other mosque like it my whole life. I hope the people in charge can afford to maintain cleanliness more and provide more lightings at the verandah area.

Masjid Kampung Laut - One of the few parodic local building remaining in Malaysia and South East Asia. It's the oldest whole wooden mosque without nails, uniqueness design structure with wood carved and has its own history... Originally site's on the Kelantan River bank at Kampung Laut, Tumpat, Kelantan. After the big floods in 1967 eventually relocated to prevent it from being eroded by the erosion of the Kelantan River. Relocated to Nilam Puri at a considerable distance and retains it original form. It's similar to the Great Mosque of Demak, Central Java, Indonesia, still in use on its relocated site and should be preserved by the local authorities... ?

Visited on 17 Mar 2022. Under major reconstruction, renovation, conservation and upgrading - so no visitors allowed, for the time being. An arch is also being built, at the road entrance leading to the masjid.

Nice masjid out of wood. Unfortunately, we cannot enter as this is still under construction. Projected to finish by May/June 2022.
