I stayed here for two nights in Feb, in room 13. First off, this hostel and DFS Capsule hotel are one and the same. It's just that they moved to this new location. If I hadn't been in Melaka already and seen this hotel, I'd probably have gone to the wrong place were it's still marked to the north of the actual location. I thought the check-in was strange. I was asked to pay government tax, but not for the stay. So I thought I must've been charged on my card. More on this later. After this, I was shown to my room which is up a flight of stairs. All the rooms and facilities are on this floor. The room I got was 13, which was a 6 bed capsule. The capsules looked a little like wooden crates stacked on top of each other. 3 on the bottom row and 3 on top, all side by side. I got the D capsule which was in the middle of the bottom row. Each capsule has a private light, a privacy curtain and an electrical socket. Entry into the capsule was like entering a tube and the entrance could be covered with the curtain. With the curtain down, the capsule was very dark and conducive to sleeping. Each capsule also comes with a locker under the bottom row of capsules. The lockers are about medium sized and mine was just about big enough to fit my medium sized backpack. There’s no chance of fitting a large backpack or a suitcase in the locker, although that’s no unusual for a capsule hotel. The locker does require a seperate padlock and you get a key for it anyway. The good thing about the room is that there’s enough space to store anything that can’t fit into the locker. The mattress was about 12cm thick, which is actually quite thin. It was fine for sleeping, but not comfortable for sitting. Sleep quality was mixed. One night I slept really well and the next, I was woken a couple of times by my roommate. There wasn't much else in the room, but that's not unusual for a capsule hotel. There is a table and chair, which was comfortable for doing some light work on a laptop. There were a total of 3 toilet/shower combos. I only ever used one of the showers, and it had a soap dispenser. The hotel wasn't at full capacity, so I never had any problems having to wait to use these. When I checked out, it was only then that the reception staff asked me to pay for the two nights, which obviously caused a lot of confusion as this would’ve been the first time I paid after and not on arrival. Location wise, the hostel is about a 10 minutes walk to Jonker Street and all the major attractions of the heritage town. There are also plenty of eateries about 5 minutes walk away where the prices are far more competitive than in the touristy area. Overall, I had a good stay. The hostel has an unusual design for their capsules, but nothing bad. I felt I was unlucky in having one poor night's sleep and the capsule is actually comfortable enough for a short stay. The staff are friendly and despite the confusion over the payment, I thought that they otherwise did their job with enthusiasm and professionalism.
