★ ★ ★ ★ ★ This small seaside temple overlooking fishing boats and the second Penang bridge has a shrine dedicated to the legendary Admiral Zheng He. Also known as Sam Poh, his portrait is painted on a giant boulder outside. The temple sanctifies a huge ‘footprint’ in the rock that’s reputed to belong to the famous 15th-century Chinese navigator.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A fishing village with boats lined up along the jetty. This is also known as the "Big Foot" temple where it is believed that when Admiral Cheng Ho of China landed here he left his footprint on the beach. There are seafood restaurants open at night and the place is well lit. The second Penang Bridge at a short distance away lends beauty and romance to the beach here.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Located at Batu Maung in a fisherman village (next to Southbay), Sam Poh Footprint Temple was built in year 1795 and was rebuilt in year 1995 with current look. The clean and peaceful temple can easily be missed even by Penangites. However, once you found it, you will be blown away with its scenic fisherman wharf and second bridge view. Now, it even comes with LED lightings. Be sure to witness 2.5m tall Zheng He (Sam Poh) statue as well as his 1.2m long footprint. The temple is opened daily from 8am to 6pm but our guess is that the temple never closes (we visited it around 7pm one evening). However, the surrounding can be too quiet to walk alone so be sure to visit it before the sky getting dark.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ A small, beautiful Chinese temple facing the sea dedicated to Admiral Cheng Ho (Zheng He/Sam Poh Kong). It is worth a visit to pay homage to Sam Poh Kong as well as to view a unique footprint mark set in stone located at the front door of the temple. Free entrance. However, the many fishing boats docked at the left side has caused an obstructed view of the sea.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well maintained small temple site. Inside one of the building you can see a shape which looks like a huge food. Information boards tell you the story of the origin. The interesting thing is that Chinese, Indians and Malays all have their own origin story.
The views of the fishing boats and boat builders next and behind the temple make this a good stop when you are visiting the War museum next door.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Many years ago, the admiral Cheng Ho's footprint was on a bare boulder. Today it's all covered into a well.
