One of the interesting attractions you can see in Penang is St George's Church (free to visit) on Farquhar Street. The church, constructed in 1816, is a nice representation of Penang's colonial past. This is the oldest Anglican church in Malaysia and one of many interesting attractions to see in the UNESCO World Heritage zone. St George's Church is of Georgian architecture. The interior features a single nave painted all white with two rows of doric columns. The marble floor is supposedly original as well. The exterior of the church features four sets of double columns and a spire atop the church. There is also an all-white pavilion in front of the church. Overall, St George's Church is worth a look-see if you plan to visit the attractions along Jalan Masjid Kapitan Keling (Pitt Street). You can conveniently see the church in 10-15 minutes.

Closed when we checked it out but still a very beautiful building to check out while you walk past. The lady in the little heritage museum next to it said that the church lights up in the evening too!

Stunning and miraculous 200 year old church! The pure white building is simply magical and the surrounding lawns are a beautiful setting for such a magical church. No photos allowed inside but the beauty of this church is in its simplicity - stunning!

St. George’s Church is set next door to the Penang State Museum & Art Gallery. Built in 1817 by the East India Company using convict labour, it is Southeast Asia’s oldest Anglican church and one of the oldest buildings in Penang. The architecture and design is largely Greek and relatively unpretentious. The gracefully proportioned building was designed by Captain Robert Smith (a military engineer) whose beautiful oil paintings still hang in the Penang State Museum. The interior is a cool pastel blue with marble floors and outside the main building on the church grounds is a memorial to Sir Francis Light in the form of a Greek temple – an elegant pavilion with definite Victorian style to it. It was built in 1886 on the centenary of the founding of Penang; just down the road is the double-spired Cathedral of the Assumption.

The St George Church on Farquhar Street in Penang is the oldest purpose built Anglican Church in South East Asia and carries a beautiful architecture. However usually when I drive pass, the gate seems to be closed until today when there is a service going on inside the church. However it does read that the church is opened on Tueaday to Saturday from 0830 to 1230 ans 1330 to 1630 and all day Sunday. There is also the small round rotunda built to commemorate Sir Francis Light in front of the church. The 200 year celebration also brought on a glass enclosed 2m or so tall Mahogany Wood Cross and a time capsule buried only to be opened in a hundred years. Anyway this is a popular place for wedding photos and if it is opened do drop in for some nice photos.

We've been here, even though we only see from the outside. Unfortunately there is no misa in the church, maybe we are allowed to watch it. The building is cool, maintained very well with the age of the building that has been hundreds of years. Salute to the Penang government & church administrators.
