Kajian mengenai aspek lokasi atau penempatan kegiatan ekonomi dilakukan oleh pakar dalam bidang ekonomi geografi. Pakar ekonomi geografi melihat sistem ekonomi dengan mengambil kira elemen ruang sebagai angkubah utamanya, berbeza dengan pandangan ahli-ahli ekonomi yang menumpukan perhatian kepada sistem dan proses ekonomi. Sumbangan pakar ekonomi geografi melalui teori-teori lokasi yang dikemukakan berguna terutama sebagai asas merancang dan membangunkan kawasan-kawasan industri serta penempatan penduduk. Teori utama yang dibincangkan oleh pakar geografi ialah Teori Pemusatan. Christaller, seorang pakar geografi terutama dalam teori pemusatan ini mengutarakan konsep lapisan atau hierarki yang tersusun dalam kedudukan sesebuah pusat bandar utama. Beliau mengatakan pusat bandar utama menjadi induk kepada pusat-pusat bandar kecil yang lain. Hubungan pusat bandar utama dengan pusat-pusat bandar kecil yang lain adalah berdasarkan tiga prinsip utama iaitu: 1. Prinsip pemasaran 2. Prinsip laluan 3. Prinsip pentadbiran Di bawah prinsip pemasaran, beliau mengatakan terdapat dua kategori barang iaitu (a) barang-barang tinggi dan (b) barang-barang rendah. Barang-barang tinggi diertikan sebagai barang yang memerlukan kawasan pemasaran yang luas seperti kenderaan berenjin dan mesin-mesin berat. Barang-barang rendah pula dimaksudkan sebagai barang-barang yang kawasan pemasarannya terhad seperti barang makanan basah dan perkilangan kecil seperti barangan plastik. Prinsip pemasaran ini mengatakan pusat bandar utama dan pusat bandar kecil yang lain masing-masing berkongsi mengagihkan barang keluaran yang diperlukan oleh para penduduk di wilayah itu. Di bawah prinsip laluan, pusat bandar utama dan pusat bandar kecil yang lain akan berkongsi mengagihkan keluaran barang-barang berdasarkan laluan yang paling dekat. Per-kongsian ini akan menimbulkan perkongsian dua hala antara pusat bandar utama dengan pusat bandar kecil yang lain. Bagi prinsip pentadbiran, kedudukan pusat pengeluaran barang-barang bagi bandar kecil di kawasan bandar utama menyebabkan bandar utama ini menguasai keseluruhan pengagihan keluaran barang di kawasan yang terlibat. Bentuk yang diwujudkan oleh prinsip pentadbiran ini membawa kepada konsep penubuhan bandar raya atau metropolis. Seorang pakar geografi Jerman bernama Losch mengembangkan lagi konsep pemusatan ini dengan menekankan kepada prinsip laluan yang sudah dihuraikan di atas. Studies on aspects of location or placement of economic activities are conducted by experts in the field of geographical economics. Geographical economists view economic systems by taking into account the element of space as its main variable, in contrast to the views of economists who focus on economic systems and processes. The contribution of geographical economists through the location theories presented is useful especially as a basis for planning and developing industrial areas as well as population settlements. The main theory discussed by geographers is the Theory of Centering. Christaller, a geographer especially in the theory of centralization, articulates the concept of layers or hierarchies that are arranged in the position of a major urban center. He said the main city center became the parent to other small town centers. The relationship of the main city center with other small town centers is based on three main principles, namely: 1. Principles of marketing 2. Principle of passage 3. Principles of administration Under the principle of marketing, he said there are two categories of goods namely (a) high goods and (b) low goods. High-end goods are defined as goods that require a large marketing area such as motor vehicles and heavy machinery. Inferior goods are defined as goods with limited marketing area such as wet food items and small manufactured goods such as plastic goods. This marketing principle says major city centers and other small town centers each share the distribution of manufactured goods needed by the residents of the region. Under the route principle, major city centers and other small town centers will share the distribution of the output of goods based on the nearest route. This partnership will give rise to a two-way partnership between the main city center and other small city centers. As for the administrative principle, the position of the center of production of goods for small towns in major urban areas causes these major cities to control the entire distribution of production of goods in the areas involved. The form created by these administrative principles led to the concept of the establishment of a city or metropolis. A German geographer named Losch further developed this concept of centralization by emphasizing on the principle of route already described above.
