★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Spent a bit of time driving around in circles to find this specific place that I was told about by a friend. The atmosphere was immediately set as we walked past the 3 refurbished Volkswagen beetles then into what is easily described as a mancave that would not look out of place on the streets of Melbourne. The owner, Sheehan, greets us comfortably in english that was of a higher quality than that spoken by my schoolmates in Sydney. He then proceeds to tell us about what he wants to achieve with his shop.
I came here just looking for a pipe shop, but we found something different. Through this shop Sheehan promotes a local collective of artisans. He, and an offsider, are leatherworkers of no small skill. Alongside his tobacco products he sells hand made pipes by a talented man named Fitri, with these gentlemen it appears your imagination is the limit to which they can craft things. The leatherwork is a fusion of traditional and technical, including simple stamping all the way to intricate images being burned in with a laser. And as for Fitri's wood work, well, instead of struggling to find words that do justice to his skill, I will just say it's bloody brilliant.
But it did not stop there. This Heaven Of Tobacco collective includes a chef. A jovial character, with an infectious smile, called Pe Do. We were invited to his restaurant after procuring our pipes. Here we enjoyed some of the best Malaysian food I have ever had. Sitting in the open air dining area of the Hanif Kitchen made for a thoroughly enjoyable evening of conversation with these craftsmen. Shame we had to work in the morning, elsewise I would of been quite content to stay there until the early hours.
