★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Old and overgrown, the workers say the cemetery goes back over 100 years. Still space for one or two graves. As you go further in, the graves get much older and closer together.
Strange plants grow here, plants that have barely any leaves, plants that are mostly thorns, grow in big tangles like barb wire, and the thorns come off the branches and lodge in your clothes and skin.
The large tree in the middle of the cemetery was probably planted as a sapling between a few family graves. Over the course of decades, maybe a century, the tree has grown and spread its roots further, and the trunk is wide enough now that several men could stand around the trunk and their hands not meet. Poking out from inside the trunk, a few gravestones are visible.
The cemetery ends at the river behind it.
I cannot read Chinese, so could not know how old the graves are.
There is a strange feeling of eerie calm, walking among the plots, looking at the photos of those buried there, while pulling thorns out of my shoes and trying and failing not to stumble and fall. So not that much calm. Also lots of dogs at the entrance so...
