Gen can proudly stand amongst the upper echelons of fine dining restaurants in both Malaysia and Asia generally. It is a gastronomic adventure that takes you on a journey through local flavours and delicacies. My girlfriend and I took her Chinese Malaysian parents here as their first ever fine dining experience. Gen definitely did not disappoint! Each manicured course was complex and interesting, and was made all the more special by Cherie (hopefully spelled correctly) going the extra mile to narrate the menu in both English and Mandarin. For my girlfriend's parents, who did not speak much English, and for me (who does not speak much Mandarin), it enriched the experience and ensured that no one was left out. If you find yourself in Penang, take the time and spend the money to visit Gen. You will not regret it. (I'm only posting a photo of the first course of many, so as to not ruin the surprise of each dish!)

Definitely a must try if you are into experimental tasting menus; and if you are not, you should try it nonetheless. As far as menu concept is concerned, it might not be for everyone but i definitely dig it. My favourite part of the experience is the flavour balance; something they nail to the tee. Another thing is serving temperature, they really got it done perfectly. (something i usually dont take notice) The wine pairing option is also a good option, all paired pretty well. Service was 10/10 considering its a one-person show.

Love the fine-dining innovation into local produce - food was bite sized and just enough to fill your tummy. Portion in the beginning was small but later courses are enough. Also really the cosy small space and the vibe - relaxed and not too serious Would go back to try dinner menu

Truly spectacular. Very carefully considered, thoughtful and tasty food. Malaysian in spirit, ingredients and flavours. International in taste and execution. What a find! Without a doubt the best fine dining restaurant we’ve been to in Malaysia. Looking forward to coming back soon! Set course degustation, but trust them. Well explained, well paced and carefully and professionally done. Service, wine, attention and food all same top notch level. Wow!

Every dish was well-executed with incredible attention to detail, especially in terms of presentation. An emphasis on local suppliers of ingredients to reflect 根’s roots in Malaysian flavors. I’ll definitely be back again.

Gen achieved perfection that only very few restaurants in Malaysia could achieve. Every course have their own story which shows that the chef have put a really good thought on it. The flawless service, the whimsical presentation, the high quality ingredients, the delicious meals, the elaborated sequence, no wonder they are in the top 100 best Asian restaurants. Overall, the craftsmanship is really commendable especially in elevating Malaysian cuisine and putting Malaysia food on the map. 10/10!

Came here twice and both as satisfied. Every dish is anticipatory and full of surprise. My friends from Singapore say this is one of the most memorable and wonderful dining experience they have ever had in years. This is absolutely a place to have a good time with people who love food.

*Lots of street parking at the side of the building, and it is also situated below The Prestige Hotel if you need parking urgently. Ambience: Quiet atmosphere that is perfect for coming with your partner for a really nice date. Comfortable environment too and was very relaxing. Service: No complaints here, and despite only have 2 floor staff they were really attentive to our needs. The staff even took the time to explain the background of each dish and ensured we knew how to properly consume the dishes. We were even given a few surprises towards the end of the meal (won’t spoil it here, but it was a really nice touch and was much appreciated) Food: One of the highlights of my Penang trip as I felt that most dishes had ingredients that were unique to Penang and its identity, while giving a nice twist. Again, I won’t spoil it here but this was definitely an enjoyable experience. Price: Excluding the deposit and the drinks that were ordered, I would say it comes up to roughly RM380 per person? I do feel that for the experience you are getting it is a fair price and is definitely still on the affordable side of an omakase type experience. Conclusion: Although this review was a bit vague on the type of food offered, I do think that it is definitely one of the more unique type of food I’ve had while I was here and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Do come here if you are in Penang!
