★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Food was extremely good. The nyonya chicken, ocra, and especially the home-made otak-otak were superb. But the must-have would be the cendol. Affordable and awesome! Please note that HomeTaste Melaka opens 11:00am and closes at 7:30pm. Off-days are Wednesdays.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Location is strategic, but you might miss it due to its position. Parking readily available. The staff are friendly and helpful. Wide choices provided, unfortunately priced a bit steep as compared to the portion size. Worth a try, but get ready to burn a hole in your pocket. Nice, decent Nyonya food. And please do try the cendol. Hits the spot at the end of the meal.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Had a good lunch with great company this afternoon in Malacca at “Home Taste Melaka” Restaurant. A Nyonya (Peranakan) restaurant in Malacca’s Taman Kota Laksamana Jaya. This area is a relatively new development on reclaimed land that is close to the Melaka river estuary.
As a whole, it was a thoroughly enjoyable meal with authentic nyonya flavours. I’d wager a pretty penny that the chef is a nyonya/baba.
So here’s what we had…
We started with a bowl of Nyonya Laksa. I liked the flavours but thought it had some draw backs. The toppings used were just average in quality & taste and in some way, let down the excellent broth it came in. Ironically, whilst I say the broth was excellent, I personally do not like my curry noodle broth to be as rich as this example, especially when the richness came from an abundant amount of coconut milk. It left a cloying feeling after the first few mouthfuls. Nonetheless, that is how this dish is supposed to be and I’d rate this a 7.5/10
Next up, we had a number of dishes with steamed rice (although I personally skipped the rice).
Assam Pedas (Spicy Tamarind) Golden Snapper. Excellent! A good balance of spicy vs. sour and the density of the broth is just right to be paired with the steamed rice. Fish was fresh and firm but soft to the bite. An 8.5/10 for me.
Ayam Pongteh - What can I say, an incredibly delicious dish that would have been near perfection if this restaurant served pork and this was a Babi Pongteh dish. The use of chicken instead or pork was not too bad but given the top notch sauce and obvious expertise of the chef, I feel the lack of the “meat of the gods”… a.k.a. pork was an opportunity at cooking perfection missed. An 8/10… probably 9.5/10 if it had been pork. ?
Lemak Nenas Udang (Prawns in a rich pineapple broth). Good if not quite a match for the first two dishes. Still, fresh prawns and a tasty enough broth (I personally would have liked it a tad thicker in consistency) means this still merits a 7.5 score.
Sambal Terung (long brinjal in a chili & dried shrimp paste mix) - I liked this dish. The brinjal (egg plant / aubergine) was only lightly coated with the chili paste which allowed the natural flavours of the long brinjal to shine through. The texture of the brinjal also enough to convince me that it was a fresh, quality produce and was handled in a skilled manner so as to ensure it was not over cooked and mushy. I’m guessing some people may prefer a more generous coating of sambal. Another 7.5/10 for me.
The final dish was a “cincaluk” omelette. Cincaluk is a fermented baby shrimp concoction that is not something I particularly enjoy. So whilst the omelette was cooked well, the taste wasn’t exactly for me. If I’m rating this based on general opinion and excluding my preference to stay away from cincaluk, I’d actually say this dish maintains the average 7.5 rating I have been giving. If it was personal taste, then perhaps a 6. ?
After our main meal, we shared a couple of bowls of chendol. Good “gula melaka” (palm sugar) syrup. Flavourful but not too sweet. The ice shavings were quite coarse, recalling an old school manual ice shaving machine. Toppings we generous. I liked this dessert. An 8/10 for me.
Overall I’d give the whole dining experience an 8/10. A place I’d comfortably recommend to others.
Why not a 5 Star experience… Pork & Peranakan cooking are a pairing made in heaven. ? Pork free takes just that bit of perfection away from the food.
UPDATE: On a recent visit, tried their Chili Garam Fish. Absolutely yummilicious! Right up there with the tastiest I can recall having for this dish.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Good location, easy to park. The cendol is the nicest I've had so far, the gula melaka is so so strong, now I just can't eat any other cendol. Fried chicken wing with gula melaka is an interesting dish not commonly seen, it's addictive. Bendi with sambal is a must to order too, sambal is da bomb! Basically all dishes are authentic and solid, highly highly recommended.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Visited this place at the recommendation of a local friend. We were not disappointed.
It is located at Kota Laksamana. New area and away from the tourist crowds. The restaurant is nicely decorated. Their service is friendly but be warned, if they are busy, you need to have some patience.
We came for lunch so we did not ordered a feast. We had Nyonya Laksa, Mee Siam, Asam Pedas Fish, Lemongrass Chicken, Sambal Bindi. We closed it off with Cendol.
Excellent - Sambal Bindi (perfectly cooked and the sambal was heavenly)
Good - Laksa, Lemongrass Chicken, Fish
Average - Mee Siam
The Cendol was very good. After spending time eating so many different cendol in Melaka. This has to be one of the better ones available.
Overall their food is good. Wish that I had chance to sample more dishes. Will sure visit it again the next time I am at Melaka.
Footnote: prices are resonable. Our most expensive dish was the fish, almost 50% of our bill (the server did inform us of the price so it was not an issue) by the way, the fish dish is delicious too. Even my kids who do not like spicy food, continued to eat despite the heat.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Family of five. Had lunch. Ordered the nyonya laksa, nyonya black mee, pineapple fried rice, sambal prawn, nyonya chap chai and otak otak. Tasty food. Cendol is the old school type. Coarse ice, i like it. Just the right balance of gula melaka and santan. Otak otak was fragrant, with good chunks of fish meat in it. Laksa broth was flavorful with lots of toppings. I loved the sambal prawn. Juicy, savoury and just the right amount of spice. Worth a try if you're in town. Away from the crazy touristy restaurants. Reasonable price, good portions. Friendly lady staff(didn'tget her name), who recommended the right dishes for us.
