There are Malaysian Customs and Thailand Customs located within this building.. But they close around 4.30pm... So if you are taking a 6pm trip to Thailand.. You MUST arrive early to get your passport stamped by both counters first... After that you are free to roam around the station to have coffee or to smoke..

This is an easy way of getting to Hatyai from KL. It took 5 hours plus from KL to Padang Besar by ETS @ RM76 - getting down the train - buy shuttle train ticket within the railway station @ 70 baths - both country’s custom check - getting up to shuttle train and travel to Hatyai- reach Hatyai in one hour time. No long queues compare to Bukit Kayu Hitam.

Malaysia public transportation is a disaster. Not much things to do here, no ATM. And the station itself is not well connected -in terms of public transport and pedestrian walkway- with the surrounding area. The only transport you can get is some unlicensed taxi service. And if you want to walk to nearest shopping complex, no proper pedestrian walkway. Payment by cash only. Stairs and no escalator, only tiny elevator for one disabled person. Not a good first impression of Malaysia.

Big train station, with integrated thai/malay immigration stations, get stamped out of thailand and stamped in to malaysia within same building and vice versa. Small restaurant upstairs. Eat at hat yai/butterworth before getting here or bring your own food and water. NO place to change money, so bring malay ringgits and/or thai baht. NO ATM. Mind 1 hour time difference between malaysia and thailand. Padang besar is very small town so not much to see. Can purchase train tickets in station. Thai ticket office is on ground floor (platform level) and malay (ktm) ticket office is upstairs. Ktm train (platinum) costs 104 ringgits to KL sentral, kommuter train to butterworth costs 11.4 ringgits. See pictures for thai train details

Train station that have custom immigration both for malaysia and thailand. I am impressed with immigration staff here, smiling and welcome back us, The only minor thing is the immigration at Thailand side, they don’t allow us to enter Thailand without extra payment, not sure why

As of 9th of May 2022, even though the border immigration is open, the gate to the pedestrian foot bridge connecting the entrance of Malaysia immigration and Padang Besar train station is still CLOSED!!!!!! This means you have to take a friggin taxi (I was charged 10 rm) from the train station to the immigration area as it is a few kms of convoluted road and NOT walkable.
