Not many of us know that in the whole of South East Asia, there is a school named after Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
This school is at Jalan Guntong, Buntong, Ipoh, Malaysia and its called Kalgidhar School.
Notice in the first photo (1934), the kids are all carrying kirpan. They are all Sikh kids. Today we have kids from different races studying here. Punjabi was taught in school as late as 1950s and 1960s.
The building you see in the 2nd photo was put up in 1950s.
What does Kalgidhar means? Kalgidhar’ means the holder of the Kalgi (Plume) which is made up of feathers and have pearls studded to make it look beautiful.
Once a woman devotee gifted Guru Gobind Singh a beautiful Kalgi. The Guru’s mother, Mata Gujri attached it to his turban. The child looked so good that words of praise were the only thing in the air and everyone called him the lord of the Plume, Sri Kalgidhar.
