History of Universiti Teknologi MARA started as RIDA Training Hall which operated from November 1956 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The Training Hall was set up as a trial center offering preparatory courses for English teenagers. RIDA stands for the Rural and Industrial Development Authority, formed in 1950 to help improve the economy of indigenous people. The Latehan Hall was inspired by Dato 'Onn bin Ja'afar, the result of his visit to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), in 1951. Soon, in June 1965, the RIDA Latehan Hall was placed under the Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA), and its name was changed to MARA College. This college continued to grow into the most important unit in the MARA Training Division, until October 14, 1967, Maktab MARA was awarded the new name of the Institute of Technology MARA (ITM). Subsequently in 1996, ITM was upgraded to a university. However, his name was not changed until August 26, 1999, MARA Institute of Technology was officially named Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). UiTM has 2 songs namely "UiTM Di Hatiku" and "UiTM Citizens' Vision". Two UiTM students, Ahmad Reduan Rozali and Muhamad Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin were among Malaysian climbers who reached the summit of Mount Everest at 10.50am Malaysia time, Sunday, May 22, 2004. Ahmad Reduan, 22, is a Diploma student in Applied Science while Muhammad Muqharabbin, 22, a Diploma in Health and Fitness at UiTM. They trained in Wanaka, New Zealand from July 30 to August 20, 2004. They came down from Mount Everest and arrived at the base camp on May 23, 2004.
