Sadly this Char Koay Teow has deteriorated over the years, leaving the young cook relaxed on a busy morning. Business must be bad as my RM6 order came with a singular prawn.

This is one of the few places where you can still get crunchy "bak eu pok" or fried lard cubes in your char koay teow. Yummy. For laksa lovers, you get a choice of the local assam laksa or the Siam lemak version. Both are tasty. During the MCO3.0 lockdown, I decided to order takeaway lemak laksa for RM5 per pack. The portion was generous, with veggies filling up my bowl before even I added the rice noodles. The soup was 'lemak' & fragrant, though a bit sweet. As the amount was quite big & I'm a fairly small eater, I portion into 2 small servings.

A small local kopitiam in Pulau Tikus, which serves good Char Koay Teow and also Laksa. This is one of my favourite place for Char Koay Teow and Laksa. Not overhyped, and not commercialised. There are many locals who come here for the good ones.

The Char Koay Teow was dry but in a big portion. It was NOT to my liking which I preferred slightly wet with stronger fried aroma. Tried their Local Coffee with evaporated Milk (Kopi Se), quite bland. I felt and tasted the coffee which I felt was NOT roasted enough and the deep coffee aroma is missing.

CKT (chow kuey teow) galore in Penang, every other stall claims to be the best. It's all about the jet fire and the duck egg, yes you heard me duck egg makes all the calories worth it, among other morsels. This particular shop opposite the police station in Pulau Tikus in my opinion is one of the better ones, a second generation father to son like many other eateries in Penang. There's also an asam laksa stall which is also a passed down business, a twin combo. Makes you wonder will the current generation takeover? It's a gritty kopitiam so don't mind the grit.

Great place for a plate of Char Koay Teow. The recipe and cooking style have been passed down the generations and many of us would remember buying from the grandma or father ☺️

The better Char Kuey Teow Lorong Selamat, Siam Road, Ah Leng.. just a few names when it comes to CKT. When in Penang especially the island, almost every nook and corner you can find CKT. So which CKT is the best, you might ask? I don't know how to answer this question.. my vocabulary is not big enough to justify my decision. But I do like it when I eat a good plate of CKT. My second morning in Penang Island and I was visiting Komtar with the family so I looked up my list and Sin Hwa was quite near to my destination. After solving the difficult parking puzzle, we walked a shirt distance here to enjoy one of the most debated dish of all. Located along the busy Jalan Burma, the CKT stall is placed right in front of the restaurant with a fan to direct the smoke outside. A simple kopitiam with the boss frying plate and plate of CKT, one by one.. while an elderly lady (I assumed that she was his mom) was seen preparing drinks. My verdict? It was very good.. enough wok hei, the Kuey Teow came not lumped together, the quintessential cockles were present and 3 rather big piece of prawns (calamari was present too) were given. Flavour-wise it ticked the right box for me, while the kids enjoyed the same dish minus the spiciness. A cuppa of Kopi O Kosong and the day just got better from thereon.

Great plate of penang style char koay teow. Good wok hei, enough chee yau char and the prawns and sihum are just nicely portioned and fresh, plus chinese sausage. Much better then the CKT we had earlier at Ping Hooi and beats queuing up for 1hr++ at Siam road any day. Kudos to my buddy Alvin Chan for introducing this gem!
