★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Gem of a discovery, this nondescript Hainanese kopitiam standing along Kimberley Street, hidden in the middle of a row of shops. If not for the kind recommendation of the celebrity Chee Cheong Fun Cantonese old master operating across the street, this Hainanese delight would have remained a secret destination by the locals. The Hainanese fried noodles (RM5), a mixture of yellow mee and rice vermicelli is cooked in a chicken broth with prawns and pork, simmered until soft and its sauce absorbed fully to give the noodles a nice sheen to match its umami. The dish is garnished with fried shallots and matched by an enticing sambal belacan, fragrant and piquant enough to bring back childhood memories of making the same on my mum's batu giling (granite metate) for her Nyonya dish. The culinary art here beats the best of Penang style fried Hokkien noodles, perhaps the secret is hidden in the darker sauce.
