★ ★ ★ ★ ★ It is at the roadside, there is another wantanmee shop inside the coffee shop which is not the “Mother and son”. Please be aware ? the famous delicious wantanmee is at the roadside as my picture.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Mother and son wan ton mee is located at the chulia hawker street. The best wan tan noodle you can get in Penang. The noodle is served hot! They have few tables available for dine in!

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The best Penang's mother and son can offer in wanton mee says a lot about how this Cantonese craft has been lost in compromising to the local taste of the Hokkien community. Already priced at a premium of RM6.00, a sweet plate of dry soft noodles with charsiew heavily dyed red and a trio of flour encrusted wantons presents itself as an edifice of culinary perfection on this island. No wonder the other Hokkien populated island in the far south found no shame in adding a dash of tomato ketchup to this classic Cantonese heritage, and called it a Singaporean cultural dish ... it cannot taste any worse. Any afficiandos of HK or KL wanton mee best stay away from Penang's best in order not to cry in shame after the first bite.
Post pandemic, the stall has moved on to the junction on Lebuh Carnavon securing some piped water. The dish made no improvements with its watery soysauce bereft of lard tones and caramel, now heavily anaethesized with MSG.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ For some reason, I unwittingly had 3 Wonton Noodles from 3 different vendors in Penang today. ??? The first one was at a Kopitiam along Macalister Road, called Chicken Leg Wan Thun Noodles, which was quite good. (Can't remember the name of the Kopitiam, except that it was next to Happy Mart and had a popular Beef Noodles stall, which I slagged off because it was so, so, so bad.) The second one was at Tok Tok Mee, and that was equally good except that the Wontons I had tasted off-puttingly funky. However, this Mother & Son Wonton Noodles blew the 2 other Wonton Noodles out of the water!
Although Mother & Son's noodles weren't as QQ as Tok Tok Mee's noodles, this surprisingly cheap RM 5.50 melody of noodles (can't tell whether egg-based or not), braised Char Siew, deep fried and water-cooked Wontons, and pickled green chillies swimming in a much wetter dark soya sauce base, was light and just right, not overpoweringly drenched with denser dark soya sauce the way Malaysians like theirs. I didn't get the pieces of crispy pork lard that others had claimed, but it didn't matter. You can say it's just another bowl of Wonton Noodles, but the experience was no less than ecstatic! ?
A shame Mother & Son's Wonton Noodles doesn't come with a bowl of hot soup.
Honestly, no matter how many times anyone would slag this vendor and his wonderful Wonton Noodles off, customers would come pouring in droves. ?
I wouldn't miss Mother & Son the next time I visit Penang.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ Well-known wantan mee among local penangites as well as tourists. Springy lye noodles cooked to perfection and seasoned with black soy sauce and oil. Add in char siew, fried wantan, boiled wantan, pickled chilies, some vegetables and last but not least, the soul - crispy fried pork lard. Mixed well and start eating. Each bite will bring smile to your face. Try to have fried lard in every bite. HEAVEN.
It's a hawker stall beside the road so seats very limited and usually get immensely crowded during dinner time. You may go earlier, to avoid the peak hours.

★ ★ ★ ★ ★ The best wanton noodles you can get (maybe the whole West Malaysia). Affordable price (Small RM5 and Large RM6.5) with sufficient portion of noodles and wanton. During late evening, there will be long queues (mostly take away). There are a few tables and chairs for dine in too albeit some are open air.
