There are no pictures of the original and charcoal β€œheong pengs” because I was so caught up in wolfing them down, it completely slipped my mind. That’s how much I like Sin Eng Hoe’s version (and I grew up eating many brands of heong pengs). Here’s why: 1. The pastry is toasty-crackly on the outside and soft and flaky on the inside. And they stayed that way (stored in the original plastic bag) on the dining table, for the two days it took me to polish off a bag of 5. Every time I crunched into a heong peng, I was amazed anew at how well it kept. Tempted to keep one aside for a week to see how that would affect the taste, but I was too weak. 2. The flour tasted full-bodied and fresh - this place must use good flour. 3. The molasses centre was not too salty not too sweet with a subtle savouryness. A special call-out to their salted egg yolk (a whole yolk) and pork floss pastry. It was rich but so well balanced I felt satisfied and light afterwards. I realised I have been gushing. But I am glad that a local told me about this air-conditioned gem on the ground floor of the Octagon in New Town, far from the more touristy biscuit shops near my hotel in Old Town. I took a Grab there and back, and it was well worth the journey.

Located at Ipoh historical landmark (The Octagon), this confectionery shop is popular for many of their house baked pastries. Love the Kaya Puffs, Heong Peng, Salted Egg Biscuit & Peanut Candy. Other popular local productions include Oldtown Recipe's Spicy Prawn Achar & Salted Fish Achar. So satisfying when accompanied with a bowl of steaming hot white rice. Come Ipoh must try!

The kaya puff here is the same as the very popular shop sin Eng heong. But without the long queue and still available even after 8pm. Just less than 3 minutes walk from Sin Eng Heong.

It was a good bakery/Biscuit factory to buy Ipoh bread as a souvenir! I bought many and they are delicious! ??? It's also good to gift to friends or parents!
