Highly recommended by my peers. Not bad, nostalgic setup - coffee in an alley. Tight space, not ideal for big group. Kopi on the gao side, suitable for those who love their kopi gao gao. Steamed bread ok, not too bad.

Seriously so so only. Its definitely more cleaner than the other alley place (probably thats the missing secret recipe) I wont go out of my way recommend it but its on to try list for out of towner. Simple old school breakfast place.

Another breakfast experience on a recent trip to Penang. This one unexpectedly, a less than stellar experience. Unexpected because this was a visit to the wildly popular “Toh Soon Cafe”, packed most days with locals and tourists alike. They are famous for their Hainanese bread toasted on a charcoal grill and Hainanese styled local black coffee. A buddy and I ordered the toast. His was buttered, mine was topped with a combination of butter and kaya (a sweet coconut & egg jam). Yummy. This was a good start. We ordered a cup each of the raved about Hainanese local black coffee… Hmm… not so good. Zero aroma. Stale coffee powder? Perhaps but given their popularity, the coffee powder turnover should be double quick. So more likely, just a poor roast or coffee bean quality. Not quite sure the rave reviews are for?? Perhaps it’s just me? No, my buddy was as scathing as I am as to how disappointing the coffee was. ? There are also packets of nasi lemak placed on each table but we restrained ourselves from eating more so can’t comment on the taste. Unlikely to return. @whiskydev

There’s a queue to grab a seat even on a Monday morning after the morning rush hour. The Hainanese toast was good. The half boiled eggs were over done(yolk weren’t runny) and I really enjoy the Hor Kar Sai(Hokkien direct translation = tiger bites lion). Basically it’s cocoa and coffee with milk. I didn’t like that they weren’t too good at managing the queue as some customers came in from the back and the shopkeeper still entertained it.

I heard there was a lot of hype about this place and that it was difficult to get in without a long wait. Luckily, we happened upon it for breakfast when there was no queue. I guess the history and old-school vibes are what people are drawn to because the breakfast is pretty simple and ordinary. Having said that, I very much enjoyed my peanut butter toast with the soft boiled eggs and a kopi bing.

Beware of the long queue on the weekends. This spot is good for breakfast or tea time snack. The nasi lemak was good, could be because we were hungry. The bread/toast selection is great too! Pair them with hot tea or refreshing 8bao drink. Very affordable too.

Reached there early, no queue. It's a good place for simple breakfast after past few heavy meals. Egg and kaya toast won't go wrong.

Pretty popular breakfast spot as I had to wait to get an empty table. Its in an alley way that operates from 8am-5pm and closes on Sundays. The soft boil egg on toast was so good and comforting. The kopi ping and hot coffee was strong and sweet. The mixture of the rustic, old ambience and comfort food makes this place a spot to go to for simple breakfast or teatime.
