For a person who havw not been on a ferry before, it’s kinda amaze me for a moment that these thing have existed for a long time. A 15 minute ferry ride to relax your mind a bit aghast the rush ??

Crossing over as a pedestrian by ferry brings back memories of my annual school vacation family trips back to KL to catch the KTM train at Butterworth since the days when Penang was a free port. Christmas day was still a leisurely stroll across and back even for our 6 year old as the ferry was far from being congested with passengers. The return ticket at RM1.20 per adult and child at half price made the fun trip very affordable, but such low pricing may lie at the heart of the ferry service demise. Like any public utility, affordable transportation need to be accorded to the working class to enable them to commute between affordable housing and their workplaces on the island. Our politicians are squabbling only because there is a quick buck to be made before the next General Elections in arranging the new speedboat ferry transportation services and the development of the soon to be vacant seafronting properties at the pier. Watch this space carefully and like dock rats, vested interests will soon appear scurrying for these choice bits of public land in Georgetown.

Last time had a ride in the ferry was 10years ago in the car. By next year only cyclist or pedestrian allowed in the ferry. Good time when arriving ferry jam so can view Penang in the nite.

To travel to Georgetown, we used to take the KTM train from KL to Butterworth just to sit on the old Penang ferry. Now that it's no more in operation we jump onto a flight and fly direct from KL to PNG. Hopefully the old Penang Ferry's services will be restored again because I am sure the Penang ferry trip from Butterworth to Georgetown is on its own is an experience to be remembered and treasured by all tourist.

This ferry has been put to halt after the 31st December 2020 due to its conditioned and replaced by a catamaran. After overhauling, the Penang Ferry is commissioned to carry vehicles. Passengers travelling from mainland and island vise versa will be transported by catamaran and will be much faster.

Magnificent. Still working perfectly and always on time. This is a bit of nostalgic trip from or to Penang island. The state gov and federal gov should working together to maintain and preserve this iconic method of travelling not just for the people but for the value and heritage. Long live Penang ferry! May you live long and prosper!

The Penang ferry used to be a highlight of visiting the island, whoever made the decisions that led to its current situation should be put in prison as it was a crime. What was an efficient and well run service is just horrible now. Pedestrians have to go on an unsuitable, dirty ferry that is not good if you have baggage, is overcrowded, bags block the exits, good luck if you have any mobility issues. The boats used are not suitable for the task - yeah the old ones didn’t look great but they were 100x more efficient and had nostalgic value - you were on and off quickly with views on the way. Now it Takes forever to get everyone on and off and it’s cramped. The ferry terminal has been under reconstruction for years and years and just seems to be getting worse rather than better. Complete disaster. The bus station was quite new but already looks horrible - why the need to try and build new things but make them really badly is so desirable?

Pedestrians now are not allowed on the old Penang ferry, pedestrians have to use the catamaran which is old and grubby, soiled seats and soiled interior carpet... Feels icky to sit and smell the foul air in this closed up caramaran cabin. This is not an upgrade and is not relevant for covid times cos there is no air ventilation in the passengers cabin. There's no way for social distancing in the new catamaran passenger cabin. The original old ferry from the colonial days was far better.
