Most probably the most popular hawker hangout in Georgetown, Penang. New Lane is now closed in the evenings to host the hawker centre and the joy of walking along the street, selecting your chosen delicious meal, and then tucking it down under the stars is really an experience not to be missed. Famous stalls include the Char Koay Teow, Lor Bak, Satay and Grilled Chicken Wings. Highly recommended ??????

The only reason I still give this place 3 stars is due to the fact that it's contributing towards Penang's economy. You'll know what I mean as you read on. New Lane started life as the corner coffee shop that's still opened till today at the corner of Macalister Road and Lorong Baru (New Lane). It got popular as some of the stalls there had served very good food. The coffee shop had run out of space to house any more stalls inside it and so push cart hawkers started to line New Lane itself to sell their wares. The coffee shop then allowed their food to be brought into their coffee shop, and that's how it all began, back in 1971. As popularity grew even further, more and more stalls came and seating eventually spilled out to the street walkways itself. So, what's the secret behind New Lane and this makeshift hawker center? The variety. You can sample almost Penang delicacies in one spot, and that makes it convenient. Also, with the advent of social media, many tourists and visitors throng this place hoping to be able to dine like a local - and that's where the buck stops. You see, the locals do not, and I seriously mean that, make New Lane a must visit place for food. That's because there are better choices elsewhere. My friends who have lived in Penang all their lives have admitted that the last time they went there was probably 10 to 15 years ago, at least. Some have admitted that the only reason why one would go there is because everything else is closed, and it's their last resort. So why did this super popular haunt lose it's appeal with locals? Most of the stalls there are no longer the original ones that made the place famous in the first place, though the signboard on the push carts may say otherwise. So, what you're left with, are replacements of the original stalls. Some of the original sellers have even departed this Earth, taking along with them their secret recipes. This leaves patrons with 2nd or even 3rd grade replacements. And that's why Penangites do not frequent there anymore. Period. So, while the out-of-towners all rave about the "good food", "real local Penang experience" on Instagram, YouTube, Tik Tok etc, us locals are all laughing our heads off, seriously.

1st day of Chinese New Year and all the hawkers are out busy cooking their speรงialty dishes for all. no price hike here. Check out the queues for the famous Charcoal Char Kway Teow, Curry Mee, Lor Bak etc .. diners are all sitting outside in the open air area...this place never disappoints ...everywhere else is closed even those in Gurney and Pulau Tikus ...

Many choices to choose from. The satay stall was good! Tried out the CKT stall too and it was okay for me. Rather disappointed that the pork intestine porridge stall is no longer operating at this location. Be prepared for big crowds and long waiting times during peak hours/festive periods.

We tried a number of stalls here but they were all pretty average. Only the Lobak stall was pretty damn good, probably the best I've ever had. The Char kueh teow stall had a long line which I think is pretty unnecessary...They could just take down your order and give you an order number to pick it up later. But no, you have to line up to order and wait there until your food is ready. My friend had to wait for half hour and meanwhile every else was done with their meals while she had to stand in line...poor customer service! And after tasting it, I was not even impressed. I would come back for the Lobak but nothing else.

It's a tourist food destination. Varieties are varied but at a higher price. Taste wise it's average. You won't get the best in one place. If you want the best tasting hawker fare, you have to visit certain food courts or hawker stalls for the best.

Wide varieties of Penang Street Food. Price of certain menu could be surprisingly high. Best to ask before ordering. Overall food selections are aplenty. Taste suits my preference. Try it out for yourself to know more.

Used to be my favourite area for local delicacies but sad to say the food taste is no longer the same and price has gone up. I could get better deals elsewhere for the same kind of food. But no doubt to admit they still have many varietes of local food
